Dan Gurney & Carroll Shelby founded All American Racers in 1965 to build cars capable of beating the best at Indy
and on Formula One courses. Although Shelby's participation would not last, Gurney persevered. The first AAR Eagles
appeared at Indianapolis in 1966 and one driven by Lloyd Ruby looked like a sure winner until engine problems forced
him out of the race at 400 miles. Later Eagles dominated the grid at Indy—23 Eagles took the green flag in 1973, and
they would win in 1968, 1973 and 1975. Bobby Unser's #6 Olsonite Eagle would win the pole in 1972 at a speed 17 miles
per hour over the track record of 1971.
