Colin Chapman and Team Lotus thrived on pushing the technical envelope on design.
They produced the 1963 Lotus “Funny Cars,” and the Lotus 38 that won the 1965 Indianapolis 500 and finished second
in 1966, with Jim Clark driving. In 1968 Chapman produced a masterpiece: the Lotus 56 Turbine which Joe Leonard placed
on the pole. 1966 Winner Graham Hill qualified another Team Lotus 56 for the second starting position. Leonard was
leading the 1968 race when the turbine “flamed out” on a restart with ten laps to go.
