McLaren began the Wing Era at Indianapolis in 1971, with a revolutionary wind cheating design of wings front and rear plus side radiators. Mark Donohue won the 1972 race in a McLaren M16B for Penske Racing. Johnny Rutherford won the 1974 Indianapolis 500 in a McLaren M16C/D, finished 2nd in 1975 and won again in 1976 in a McLaren M16E for Team McLaren.
